The City has started the process of converting its vehicle fleet to operate on a dual fuel system by taking advantage of biomethane.
“Some of you (C40 delegates) have already traveled on our green buses during site visits. These vehicles use a mixture of GNC and diesel with up to 70 percent lower emissions, compared to the conventional diesel. These buses are 20% cheaper to operate, due to lower maintenance and produce lower noise levels,” Mayor Tau explained.
Metrobus chief financial officer Sabata Makoele said the use of compressed natural gas and biomethane should be encouraged because it would reduce imports of crude oil derived products, since both fuels are locally sourced and produced. “The City is planning to run 300 buses on diesel dual fuel technology, using 50% biomethane by 2016,” Makoele stated.
