The City of Chicago received a USD 1 million Clean Cities grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The money is being used to reimburse taxi owners up to a set amount of the cost of certain hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles.
Hybrids can be reimbursed for USD 2,000, the maximum allowed by the federal government under this program. CNG powered vehicles can be reimbursed for up to 100% of the implemental cost, which is between USD 9,000 and 14,000.
“In Partnership with the Clean Cities Coalition, the City of Chicago applied for grants to build green infrastructure such as Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Charging stations around the City. In building infrastructure you also need to bring users, that is why we also applied for grants that provide incentives to individuals purchasing CNG Taxis,” said Suzanne Malec-McKenna, Commissioner of the Department of Environment.
“The City of Chicago is committed to supporting these efforts and providing financial and operational incentives to offset the initial cost price of these vehicles,” said Norma I. Reyes, Commissioner of the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection.
