“They are cleaner, quieter and more economical, and it makes sense for Calgary Transit to be in the lead in proving the worth of natural gas buses throughout the natural gas economy given where we sit,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi at the unveiling for the two all-white New Flyer buses on Monday.
Moreover, Calgary Transit will take delivery of two additional CNG-powered buses in May as part of the pilot. When the trial ends, the operator will look into specifications for a new storage and maintenance garage suitable for natural gas vehicles.
The agency currently operates close to 1,100 diesel buses and the cost of this fuel has been steadily increasing – more than doubling in the past 10 years. CNG buses are less expensive to operate as natural gas prices are about 30 per cent lower than diesel costs.
