The $210 million contract with North American Bus Industries Inc. (NABI) of Anniston, Ala., one of the nation’s largest natural gas bus orders, includes heavy-duty low-floor buses with an ISL G 8.9-liter, 280 HP engine from Cummins Westport.
The first five eco-friendly buses are rolling between downtown Garland and the Royal Lane stations on the Rapid Ride Route 987 and are refueling at the four CNG filling stations built by DART and Clean Energy at the agency’s bus and mobility management operations facilities.
In addition to the 30- and 40-foot buses, which mark the latest phase of DART’s clean transit fuels program, the agency introduced a new fleet of 123 14- to 17-passenger buses. The smaller buses are part of an effort to maintain the same level of service at lower costs and are manufactured by ARBOC Specialty Vehicles of Middlebury, Ind.
