The City Council has recently signed an agreement with San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (SDMTS) and New Flyer of America, Inc., to release seven 60’ low-floor articulated CNG-powered transit buses from SDMTS contract B0570.02-12 and assign them to Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus (BBB).
BBB will piggyback on SDMTS’ contract agreement with New Flyer to expedite the purchasing process and enable the City to replace seven 40’ NABI buses from its fleet, acquired in 2002, which have been identified for replacement as they reached their useful life cycle.
The total amount of the natural gas buses will not to exceed $6,825,464, including delivery, tax, spare parts and contingency, and will be funded using Federal or State grants and County transit sales tax funds.
More reliable and efficient, these articulated buses will expand seating capacity, from 40 seats per bus to 58 seats per bus. Thus, they will assist in reducing overcrowding on high volume routes and increase passengers comfort.
