El ferry de pasajeros a GNL más grande estará operativo en 2013

Recientemente, Wärtsilä firmó contrato con la empresa de construcción naval STX Finland Oy para proveerle la maquinaria de propulsión para una nueva embarcación de la firma finlandesa Viking Line. Será el buque de pasajeros más respetuoso con el medio ambiente y eficiente en la industria hasta la fecha, comentaron desde Wärtsilä. El barco navegará entre las ciudades de Turku y Estocolmo, en el Mar Báltico.

El navío será alimentado con gas natural líquido, lo que significa que las emisiones de óxido de azufre serán casi cero, mientras que las emisiones de óxidos de nitrógeno será al menos un 80 por ciento por debajo del nivel actual estipulado por la Organización Marítima Internacional (OMI). Además, hay una reducción de las emisiones de partículas de más del 90 por ciento en comparación con las emisiones de los motores diesel convencionales, mientras que las emisiones de dióxido de carbono también son de un 20 a un 30 por ciento inferiores.

El uso de la tecnología bicombustible en el motor Wärtsilä permitirá a este ferry navegar sin restricciones en las Áreas de Control de Emisión de Azufre (SECA, según sus siglas en inglés) y en las Áreas de Control de Emisión de Nitrógeno (NECAS).

El nuevo crucero de Viking Line será capaz de transportar automóviles, camiones y remolques de carretera en viajes internacionales cortos. También está diseñado para albergar a 2.800 pasajeros y 200 tripulantes. La maquinaria y el equipamiento, así como el trabajo estructural, estará bajo la inspección especial de la sociedad de clasificación Lloyd's Register of Shipping.
