New bill to legislate energy use
Oklahoma makes efforts to boost CNG
Governor Brad Henry has recently signed a legislation designed to expand the use of clean energy in his state. The aim is to reduce the dependence on foreign oil in the whole country by increasing the use of domestic and renewable energy sources in this American state.

The statute law involves specific provisions for natural gas vehicle refuelling. It declares that Oklahoma is committed to promoting and increasing public access to CNG stations located along the interstate highway system. The scheme intends to place the facilities every 100 miles along this road by 2015, and every 50 miles by 2025, in order to encourage the use of CNG-powered vehicles.

“We applaud the state’s effort to support and emphasize Oklahoma’s clean-burning natural gas, the production of which is vital to the state’s economic vitality,” said Tom Price, senior vice president of corporate development and government relations for Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp., one of the nation’s major independent natural gas producers.

Among other regulations, the project allows to establish a natural gas energy standard to maximize development of Oklahoma’s natural gas resources. Henry, who sponsored the bill along with Senator David Myers, stated that alternative energy manufacturing companies will take a closer look at locating in Oklahoma.

It is worth mentioning another landmark about Oklahoma’s interest in developing CNG consumption in the state. Recently, Chickasaw Nation inaugurated a new filling station to the public for fleet or private NGVs. This is the first tribally owned CNG station in the state and the opening is part of the tribe’s attempt to conserve energy by moving local fleet toward natural gas.
