US: City of Norman opens to public its first compressed natural gas filling station

Equipped with slow and fast-fill dispensers, it will fuel the city's 29 NGVs as well as other public and private vehicles such as passenger cars, larger vehicles and buses, and will be open 24 hours a day on a self-service basis. It involved and investment of $1.65 million, partially funded by a federal grant, reported The Norman Transcript.

Officials estimate that the city will save up to $1.285 million over the next five years with the cheaper fuel costs. Besides, the benefits of this municipal-owned CNG station extend beyond Norman and Cleveland County as it is a ‘Sooner State product’, said Charlie Sewell of Tulsa Gas Technologies, the company that built the facility. “Most everything is Oklahoma-made,” he added.

The Norman City Council set a state precedent in adopting the Norman Alternative Fuel Program in 2009. The policy was developed in response to the high fuel costs experienced in 2008 as well as to make Norman a “greener” and cleaner environmental community.

“This is an exciting landmark event for Norman and for other cities in the state of Oklahoma,” said Mayor Cindy Rosenthal. “It’s a culmination for us of multiple efforts to be energy efficient as a city and to bring clean energy options to citizens. Now, the CNG fueling station is the last piece of that to make us more versatile.”
