Sweden: Subaru to venture into CNG cars production
At a vacant Saab Automobile facility, in Trollhättan, the automaker will convert its midsize Legacy and crossover Outback models to run on compressed natural gas. The project represents the first large-scale production Subaru will carry out in the European country and would mark the company's first foray into the NGV market.
According to Subaru Nordic communications and PR director Thomas Possling, the subcontractors for the components are already in place. The models, which are manufactured in Japan, would be shipped to Sweden for conversion, reported newspaper The Local.
Production will focus on the Swedish market initially, but the automaker will consider exporting in the future. “Of course we are interested in exporting into CNG markets. Finland is one country that has shown an interest in CNG”, said Possling, and added that Germany and Italy have the logistics in place for this fuel.
The businessman remarked it is a Nordic area project, which will also involve the production of the first Boxer CNG engine and first all-wheel drive CNG vehicle, along with Italian BRC Gas Equipment and it does not involve Subaru Japan that only provides technical support.
