Region of Murcia opens its first public compressed natural gas fueling station
Mayor of Murcia Miguel Ángel Cámara and Gas Natural Fenosa director of Mobility Solutions José Ramón Freire this morning led the opening of the new supply point located in Era Alta, as part of the cooperation protocol signed last year to promote and spread the use of natural gas as an automotive fuel.
It is an agreement in the field of current energy policies aimed at the use of cleaner options, promoting energy saving and efficiency, encouraging renewable energy and improving air quality.
As a result, Murcia has taken steps to promote natural gas vehicles across the city, while companies such as Cespa,
Disfrimur and Aguas de Murcia have already introduced the fuel in their fleets. When the new public transport service begins operations in next autumn, the
entire bus fleet will be also powered by this alternative fuel.
Cámara explained that Murcia’s commitment to a more efficient and cleaner mobility is based on two main lines of action: on the one hand, offering alternatives to private vehicles usage; on the other hand, adopting the use of clean fuels to reduce CO2 emissions and make them a real and accessible option.
The use of CNG in 29 Cespa’s cleaning and refuse collection vehicles allows Murcia to save 1,868 Teq CO2 per year compared to the pollution caused by former diesel engines. A diesel collection vehicle emits almost 280 tones of CO2 per year; whereas a compressed natural gas fueled one reduces it by 70 tons per year, representing a decrease of 25%.
