Sharjah Transport is soon to start converting its 4,800 cabs to compressed natural gas instead of using regular petrol, in a bid to protect the environment, rationalize energy consumption and preserve natural resources. According to a senior official, the move is in line with the sustainable development agreement of the International Association of Public Transport concluded in March 2009.

The hypermarket chain has started with the trial of three vehicles, which are powered by natural gas produced using waste from its stores. Run in partnership with Gnvert, haulage company Perrenot and Iveco, these trucks will be making deliveries to around fifteen Carrefour stores. With this kind of anti-waste and pro-green energy initiative, Carrefour wants to demonstrate just how committed it is to sustainable development.

Peruvian automaker Motores Diesel Andinos S.A. (Modasa) and Fiat Group’s subsidiary will collaborate to produce and commercialize the new 9-meter “Apolo” bus, featuring an FPT Industrial natural gas engine, for urban transportation.

One of the company’s main goals is to gain more ground with advanced technology vehicles, ever safer for passengers and that contribute to environmental care. With this intention, the South Korean automaker is developing natural gas-powered heavy vehicles which, at least 100 units, are expected to be introduced into the Mexican market this year. In the short term, CNG hybrids are also planned to enter the market.

The transport company has worked with Qatar General Postal Corporation (Q-Post) to bring out the first postage stamp with Mowasalat logo to coincide with the launching of the country’s first eco-friendly bus. The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and supports Mowasalat’s green project, in the process making a quality leap towards internationally approved buses.

On March 19, the new vehicles started operating in Medellin BRT transport system. With an investment of more than US$ 8 million from the Municipality of Medellin, bus operator Metro acquired 47 standard buses in total, all fueled by natural gas, which will serve in two lines, the one that runs between Belén-Aranjuez and the one that will operate in the coming days on Oriental avenue, Hospital-Industriales.

The president of the Argentine Chamber for NGVs (CAGNC) shared the experience with NGV Global executive director Diego Goldin of traveling by the country’s first bus fully operated on natural gas, which is now providing public passenger service. In an interview with Prensa Vehicular, the industry’s leading figures praised the initiative, which is finally implemented after several years trying to accomplish the mission. "An originally manufactured NGV is now running across the streets and roads of Argentina," Goldin stressed.
