Increasing interest in LNG automotive applications
“Liquefied Natural Gas, a solution for Heavy Duty Vehicles and Fleets” was the theme of the recent workshop held in Siena, last January 22nd. This event, organized by CNA Siena (a government body incorporating several transporters associations), shows the growing interest in this fuel from European transportation and logistic segments.
The workshop aimed to demonstrate the concrete value of LNG compared to conventional fuels and was attended by representatives from Volvo Trucks Italia, Iveco, Vanzetti Engineering and Logicompany, who gathered to discuss the state of the art of HD vehicles as well LNG refuelling infrastructures development.
Volvo Trucks Italia has introduced a dual-fuel FM vehicle enabling methane/diesel consumption up to 80/20%. Equipped with a 287 litres LNG cryogenic tank on-board, this truck is already circulating in Sweden, Holland and UK, while Italy seems to be the next country for commercialization. Moreover, Iveco stated that all the CNG product range can be adapted to liquified gas, thus exploiting a LNG mature technology for both heavy and professional duty vehicles.
Logicompany, a major transportation and logistic company with several hubs in Italy, was also invited to witness the concrete interest and achievability of economical convenience of LNG within their fleets.
It is worth mentioning that Vanzetti Engineering developed the first L-CNG station in Italy, which is now operative and assures that each facility is built with the upgrade for LNG refuelling, which widens the opportunity to create “blue corridors” in addition to service stations dedicated to internal fleets.
