With 50 fixed journeys with methane-fueled vehicles exclusively, the City Council, by means of the Municipal Transport Company (EMT), today launched the new 177 bus route consisting of 8-meter buses. Service starting tomorrow, the vehicles will cover the way between Plaza de Castilla and Marqués de Viana, in order to provide public transport to La Ventilla.

Even though the number of buses to be rolled out is still unknown, several meetings have been held with Omani officials to discuss the implementation. MAN hopes to focus attention on the entire region's markets, especially Oman, UAE and Qatar, as these offer great potential in terms of demand for clean-fuel buses. Currently, the automaker is testing its MAN Lion's City CNG bus in Abu Dhabi.

This percentage represents 1,104 NGVs: 671 of them belong to the city-owned bus operator EMT, 418 are waste collection trucks and 15 are Madrid Mobility’s cranes. In recent years, the City Council has also boosted a new refuelling network, which is soon to reach 16 CNG stations, including 7 public-access facilities. "This new installations will facilitate the use of natural gas as a fuel for institutions, corporations and individuals," Mayor Ana Botella said last week, at the opening of the annual meeting of the Spanish Natural Gas Association (Sedigas).

According to a report released by Auto Industry Development Institute (AIDI) and China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), the Asian country is a strong and one of the most promising countries in the world in terms of automotive technology development. In December 2011, the production of NGVs was 11,900, including 7,400 passenger vehicles and 4,500 commercial vehicles.

The list made by the Center of Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen includes the following CNG-powered models, from the first until the fifth place: Fiat Punto, Fiat Qubo Natural Power, VW Passat TSI EcoFuel, Opel Zafira Tourer CNG and VW Touran TSI EcoFuel. The Mercedes E 200 NGT and the VW Caddy 2.0 EcoFuel are also ranked in the top 15.

Fleet operators are now being invited to bid for a slice of this funding as part of a competition which opened on April 24. The ‘Low carbon truck demonstration trial’ will help drive down emissions from freight transportation as well as supporting fueling infrastructure. “The investment in natural gas stations will also give haulage firms a push to buy heavy goods NGVs – leaving a legacy that will boost clean-fuel transport well into the future,” said Transport Minister Mike Penning.

MAN will build and supply the 18-metre long Lion's City G buses to EGO-Ankara. 50 of them will be delivered by September 2012, followed by 25 vehicles every month, so that all the fleet ordered will be in Turkey’s capital by mid 2013. The buses are being produced at MAN's plant in Ankara.

The country’s natural gas-powered bus fleet includes ten vehicles in Belgrade and six in Novi Sad. Moreover, Serbia’s capital city plans to buy another 280 double-length and 120 regular-length CNG buses, which will halve the public transportation system's fuel consumption, according to Aleksandar Antic, president of the city’s assembly.
