“One or two years ago, the cost was about USD 1,500, but since then, the conversion rate has dropped due to the increasing number of conversion centers, the brands offered in the market and the technology development by suppliers. Most of CNG kits are imported from Argentina and Italy,” PGN general manager Edgardo Escobar told La República newspaper.
The businessman also explained that there are over 20 financial organizations -including banks and the locally-known metropolitan ‘cajas’- that offer credit facilities to the potential drivers who are interested in converting their vehicles to natural gas. In addition, the Cofide’s CNG fueling control system enables access to credit for the purchase of brand new NGVs.
At the same time, the growth in the number of refueling stations has allowed the widespread supply of fuel, mainly in Lima and Callao. “The challenge of businessmen and government is to promote conversions, in order to achieve the desired large-scale consumption of natural gas as a fuel and to strike a balance between supply and demand,” Escobar proposed.
