It establishes a long term approach to a market led by alternative transport fuels in the context of maintaining Australia’s security while moving towards a lower carbon economy by 2030. “The country could pursue international collaboration opportunities to learn more about the performance of CNG vehicles such as those used in Italy,” states the document.
According to the framework, natural gas has potential to be an effective transport fuel for Australian light commercial vehicle market, but it requires a distinct set of infrastructure. CNG and LNG use may increase in the medium term with investment to address technology constraints including fueling network and improvements in fuel tank systems.
Moreover, if LNG meets its potential of becoming a major marine fuel, Australia will implement a smooth transition to it conforming to an international standard to ensure the global compatibility of ship and shore.
