In comparison with gasoline, CNG price allows a reduction of 40% in fuel consumption for commercial vehicle drivers. Orlando Correa, owner of the 5,000th taxi converted to natural gas, said he took the decision to opt for NGV system as a way to be environmentally friendly and to economize. “We have to become aware of the environmental issues and in that sense I prefer natural gas, which also allows me to have a better performance and significantly save in fuel consumption every month,” he argued.
According to the Chilean website Qué Pasa Minería, there are currently more than 5,000 vehicles converted to natural gas only in Santiago. The Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications has certified about 50 models using CNG and five conversion centers. Moreover, 12 refueling stations for NGVs are operational in the nation’s capital.
Metrogas offers free conversion to taxi drivers.
