“In our region there are more than 400,000 registered vehicles, there are 4 people per vehicle if we consider that our regional population is one million 760 thousand people. This rising fleet trend extends to the whole country. Therefore, it is urgent to take measures to reduce pollution,” said Squella, Valparaíso representative.
The congressman added: “It is known that these alternatives are cheaper. For example, in Argentina nearly 2 million cars were converted to CNG, and in 2010 they saved millions of dollars”.
It is worth to mention that resolution 18,502 and decree 55 -enacted in 1998 by the Ministry of Transportation- authorize the use of compressed natural gas only in cars that provide taxi service and in light-duty commercial vehicles.
