According to data provided by the University of Andrés Bello research, the improvement in air quality could decrease the government budget on health care by USD 200 million annually.
The sector indicates that 37% of emissions come from transportation, which also generally takes part in the production of nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx), the main cause of acid rain. Besides, it generates 89% of carbon monoxide (CO), El Mercurio newspaper reported.
“Environmental authority researches in Chile reveal that diesel powered vehicles are the most important producers of pollutant emissions. Particularly, old buses and trucks are the main source of emissions with negative impact on people’s health,” explained AGN Chile executive Carlos Cortés.
