Dubai will switch 500 public cars to natural gas

Dubai Municipality, the first government department in Dubai to use natural gas for public fleet, plans to convert at least 25 per cent of its commercial and medium-sized vehicles. According to the Municipality’s director Hussain Nasser Lootah, the second phase will see a total of 438 units switching to natural gas by the end of 2012.

As part of this initiative, a modern model of pipeless natural gas refuelling stations will be also introduced in Dubai. Government-owned Emirates Gas (EMGAS) has finalised a plan to build “mother, daughter and on-line stations” to supply CNG for the entire emirate, reported the newspaper Khaleej Times.

For the conversion process, Dubai will have technical assistance from Compressed Gas Technology (CG Tech), which has already switched about 200 non-government vehicles throughout the Emirates. Conversion kits will be brought from suppliers in Europe but, according to officials, future projects may involve local manufacture.
