It is technically feasible to reduce polluting emissions like nitrous oxide (NOx), particulate matter and sulphur oxide (SOx) but in practice this will largely depend on future legislation on emissions, says the report. Besides, it recommends increasing the volume of the more sustainable bio-CNG and bio-LNG in the future.
The study also states that even though ships and vehicles powered by natural gas, electricity or hydrogen are more expensive than those powered by diesel and petrol, the additional costs tend to be compensated by the lower costs of fuel and, for road transport vehicles, the fact that duties on alternative fuels are lower.
Moreover, the Green Deal LNG, Rijn en Wadden, agreed between the government and industry in 2012, is based on future LNG use of 2 to 3 million tons. The report states that this can save around 650 kilotons of greenhouse gas, 26 kilotons of nitrogen, 1.3 kilotons of particulate matter and 7.7 kilotons of sulphur.
