In 2009, the European Commission established a regulation requiring member states to raise the share of renewable energy used in their public transportation systems to 10 percent by 2020. However, as of last year Estonia had only reached a 1 percent share, according to University of Tartu researcher Antti Roose, one of the event’s organizers.
In this sense, Ahto Oja, who heads the Estonian branch of the EU’s GasHighWay project, explained the country could raise that figure with a public transportation running on natural gas and remarked the good performance of the country’s first CNG buses, which were put into operation early this year in the city of Tartu.
During the conference, participants will also discuss ways to more efficiently use biogas locally produced, reported Estonian Public Broadcasting.
