The most popular vehicle was the Volkswagen Caddy with 2,682 units sold. The top five NGVs also included VW Touran, VW Passat, Opel Zafira and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. In addition, about 200 heavy-duty trucks and buses were registered in 2011.
The 19 percent growth made possible that CNG was the most popular alternative propulsion system in Germany last year. Moreover, the demand for natural gas vehicles is expected to increase even more in 2012 with new NGV models available, such as the VW up!
It is worth adding that natural gas has become a suitable alternative to expensive petrol and diesel, according to E.ON, which states that taking vehicles running on CNG or electricity enable users to reach their destination over 50 per cent more cheaply than with premium-grade petrol.
