The Italy-based manufacturer ended last year with 116 natural gas powered vehicles sold in Spain, which represents a growth of 29% compared to 2012 results, Europa Press news agency reports. Today there are an estimated total of 12,000 Iveco natural gas vehicles in circulation in public and private fleets throughout Europe, while offering its customers a full range of transport solutions of between 3.5 and 40 tons, plus coaches and buses.
CNH Industrial Group’s company claims to have become “absolute leader” of the Spanish market in the production and sales of commercial natural gas vehicles, since it gained 51% of all registrations in the segment during last year.
According to Iveco, the use of natural gas as an alternative fuel “is starting to attract” main transport fleets around the world due to its economic and environmental benefits; a methane powered vehicle saves fuel from 10% to 20% compared to a diesel engine and reduces annual CO2 emissions by 24.1 tons after covering about 30,000 kilometers.
Last year, Iveco led the segment of heavy duty trucks (over 16 tons) on natural gas, with a market share of 60.7% and a total of 34 vehicles registered. These vehicles are built at Madrid Iveco plant on the same assembly line as the conventional ones. In the segment of buses and coaches, the manufacturer was also a leader with a share of 64 % and doubled their registration in comparison with to the previous year.
