Metro has been awarded USD 640,000 in federal money to purchase those natural gas buses that also may be used during the 2012 College World Series, an annual baseball tournament held in Omaha.
MUD, a political subdivision and public corporation of the State, has recently invested in the construction of two public CNG refuelling stations. Besides new Metro buses, these facilities will serve Happy Cab, which is converting its taxi fleet to natural gas; MUD itself, which has 80 out of 376 fleet vehicles powered by CNG and members of the public who own natural gas-powered vehicles. The first station will be inaugurated on June 10th and the second will open shortly after.
With this initiative, Omaha intends to reduce carbon emissions as Natural Gas Vehicles for America affirmed the city might be at risk of violating tougher federal ozone standards.
