“The costs of fares using CNG would be much lower than today and we would not have to announce increases whenever the international oil price rises,” he told La República newspaper.
The leader urged the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima to promote the introduction of vehicles fitted to operate on natural gas which, in turn, would improve the service. “In addition to lower costs, it would enable us to have a fleet consisting of 50% NGVs,” he pointed out.
In the Peruvian capital, from October 2, 2010, Metropolitano’s vehicles are exclusively powered by natural gas. It is important to mention that after assessing Lima’s experience, a similar mass transit system has been implemented in the Colombian city of Medellin, where Metroplús public transport comprises only natural gas driven buses.
