In order to encourage conversions to CNG, the Gas Company of State of Rio Grande do Sul (Sulgás) in collaboration with the Taxi Drivers Union of Porto Alegre (Sintáxi), Sincopeças, Distribuidoras BR and Ipiranga launched last month the ‘Taxi Champion’ promotional campaign. The aim is to switch the entire taxi fleet of the state capital city to NGV propulsion system by the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.
The promotion was set to reward taxi drivers who install 5th generation equipment on their vehicles with 2,000 m³ of CNG. Therefore, those drivers that convert their vehicles to natural gas will recoup the investment in the kit and cylinders. In return, they must give up the rear window space to publicize the promotion for 18 months.
Claudio Antônio Fuhrmann, who has performed the CNG installation, stated: “I was afraid that the conversion could bring any damage to the original vehicle’s features, but after talking with colleagues and conversion mechanics I decided to try it out and now I am very happy with it.” The driver said that technological improvements such as the fifth generation equipment compared to previous models convinced him to execute the conversion. However, the main reason why he decided to do it was the savings in fuel cost that CNG brings.
