It is noteworthy that the emission reduction has been achieved due to a compressed natural gas-based bus, which is regarded as an enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle (EEV) that emits almost no particles and 90% less nitrogen oxides compared to a diesel bus. Therefore, the new hybrid vehicle is a high quality green alternative.
After passing the tests and introduced the prototype into the commercial service, TMB considers feasible the mass conversion of 10 buses during the next months. The completion of the first CNG-hybrid bus is part of the agreement signed between TMB and Gas Natural Fenosa in April 2010 in order to reduce emissions throughout the metropolitan area by replacing a portion of the fleet and modernizing the rest.
Both companies are working together since 1994 to introduce natural gas in local bus fleet and consequently improve air quality in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. In this sense, CNG reduces oxides of nitrogen emissions by 85%, all suspended particles and up to 20% of CO2.
