Despite these vehicles run on biogas generated from the raw sewage treatment process, they do not smell unpleasant.
Biomethane is provided by Kelda Water and Yorkshire Water, companies that make sewage treatment.
A spokesman for Kelda Water said “this technology is still new to the UK but it has been shown to have considerable potential to power cars” and stressed “by working in partnership with Sheffield City Council we hope to show that we can successfully convert waste into a sustainable fuel source for vehicles, which will help to clean the environment”.
