With a 12-ton cargo capacity, the Econic Natural Gas Techology delivers 50 percent less noise than a conventional truck and when used with natural gas is 40 percent cheaper than a diesel unit and up to 90 percent cheaper with biogas. “In addition, it emits 20 percent less carbon dioxide,” said Gerhard Gross, the president and CEO of Daimler Commercial Vehicles Mexico.
“As a company we are obliged to invest in new technologies such as electric motors, fuel cells or biogas extracted from waste methane,” said the executive, and also stated that with a population of 20 million people in Mexico City, they could generate biomethane to fuel 2,000 trucks.
As reported by the news site Terra, Gross and authorities from the automaker are already in talks with the Government of Mexico City to determine how many it will acquire.
