The executive decided not to disclose the company’s identity and the name of the city where buses will operate, but she stated that the operator had opted for the Linner G model due to a cost-effective strategy -in addition to its environmental benefits-, after conducting an study which revealed that a natural gas powered fleet and a refueling station for the buses could make a substantial difference in reducing costs. “The public transport company realized that it had to make a change to a cheaper fuel in order to continue in the transportation business,” Gutiérrez Reyes explained.
The 50-bus fleet will be the largest of its kind powered by CNG in Mexico and will the first to be natural gas EPA 10-certified, as opposed to Mexico City’s public transport RTP, which owns 30 NGVs with EPA 07 certification.
“Today in Mexico the circumstances are given to achieve 20% of the public transport fleet powered by natural gas within five years,” Gutiérrez Reyes forecasted. She also believed that there should be a state policy promoting the fuel use, while the Federal Administration should promote investments in CNG infrastructure because “many people are interested in setting up the refueling stations.”
