The City of Madrid’s Air Quality Plan gives priority to the promotion of CNG in the development of fuels and cleaner energy resources. “One of the measures we have already started with consist of 100% of the EMT route lines plying across the low emission areas do so with clean buses by 2015,” Botella stated. This will be achieved by installing filters on 485 buses, 100 of them during this year. In addition, 235 biodiesel buses are planned to be replaced with others fueled by compressed natural gas buses and 23 with hybrid technology. “It will be the first time that such vehicles will be driven by a combined natural gas and electric technology,” revealed the mayor.
Madrid bets on the use of natural gas, which is one of the conventional energy resources with less environmental impact. Natural gas accounts for 27.14% of the energy consumed in the city, five points more than in 2003, and the figure will continue to grow, especially in the road transport sector.
