It a hybrid bus with electric and natural gas motors, which was built on an existing CNG vehicle of Barcelona public transport agency’s fleet to compare the technical solutions, the emissions reduction and mainly the savings in fuel consumption that the new model would generate.
According to Gas Natural Fenosa, the combination of a low emission engine, such as CNG, with electric engines results in a vehicle with a high environmental quality. Hybrid technology will reduce 20 to 30 percent energy consumption and vehicle emissions, compared with a bus of the same features without hybridizing, the company stated.
It is worth mentioning that in February TMB introduced 31 CNG buses, under the same agreement. The Catalan company’s 2011 renovation includes about 80 vehicles in total, all running on compressed natural gas, which represent 35 percent of the entire fleet. At the same time, 80 14-years old diesel buses will be removed, getting a reduction in emissions of 346 tons of nitrogen oxides annually.
