The gas distributor EDP Naturgas Energía was part of the ‘VI Eco Rallye Vasco Navarro 2014,’ the only sporting event of this kind held in Spain, with three natural gas powered vehicles belonging to its fleet. EDP is renewing its fleet from a year ago and is replacing its diesel units with new NGVs, which currently refuel at the company’s CNG station in Vitoria, in the Basque Country.
These vehicles, which have not been modified to attend the event, are used to perform the daily operations of EDP. Specifically, the fleet includes a van used for network maintenance service, a car that provides energy management services to customers and a SUV that also services the gas network in the area.
“EDP complies with the competition’s aim of promoting environmentally friendly and alternative fuel vehicles that are also commercially suitable for everyday use,” company’s officials said according to Europa Press.
All vehicles participating in the Eco Rallye RACVN, one of only 12 races of the FIA’s official Championship organized in Spain, must use alternative energy or comply with a maximum of CO2 emissions of 120 grams per kilometer and should be also suitable for everyday use.
The race covers traffic open routes in the Basque Autonomous Community and Navarre, and the regulations established forces vehicles to make the journey at an average speed that cannot exceed 50 km/h, “since the priority is regularity and lower fuel consumption.”
