Ancap and its subsidiary Alcoholes del Uruguay (ALUR) have presented the four-fuel bio-vehicles project, which will be initially implemented in taxis. The technology will make possible the use of domestically produced energy and is expected to achieve fuel savings of 40% compared to conventional sources, as well as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining Roberto Kreimerman said that the development of such vehicles is aligned with the goals set by the national government’s 2005-2030 energy policy, which promotes the use of different clean fuel sources and seeks to raise public awareness of the energy grid change.
As a result of the analysis of different technologies, Ancap and ALUR found in Fiat’s Tetrafuel system one of the most suitable options. It operates with four different fuels: hydrous ethanol, gasoline, gasohol and CNG or mixture of any of them in different proportions.
The new system has the ability to select the most appropriate fuel for each driving condition and the user does not notice the change from one fuel to another in the vehicle. Another touted feature is the optimization of engine performance by providing an automatic selection that anticipates CNG pressure, fuel tank volume, torque demand and process efficiency.
The technology allows fuels produced in Uruguay to be used, as in the case of natural gas, which will be taken from the regasification plant in Puntas de Sayago.
