The grant was awarded by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and will cover about 66 percent of the cost to buy the vehicles. The city will pay for the rest, reported Austin Business Journal.
Acquiring 18 CNG refuse trucks for Solid Waste Services and five CNG sweepers for Solid Waste Services, Public Works and Aviation, Austin aims to prevent 9.62 tons of nitrogen oxide from entering the atmosphere every year, as well as reach carbon neutrality by 2020.
It is worth recalling that last year the city won a USD 198,090 grant from the same program to outfit some of its fleets with modern equipment.
