During the first day, the field of 24 contestants –with junior drivers, seasoned racers and four prominent motorsport legends- showed a race that was full of diversity and remained captivating up to the final lap. Maciek Steinhof (Poland) won the season opening at Hockenheim in front of Kris Heidorn (Germany) and Formula 1 legend Martin Brundle (Great Britain).
According to VW’s press releases, Heidorn managed a good start and maintained the lead in front of Brundle and Steinhof. When the first driver made a slight mistake on entering the finish straight, Steinhof took the lead, running in front of Heidorn by a narrow margin. Dakar winner and two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz fought a number of duels as did the former DTM Champion Frank Biela and Grand Prix legend Jacques Laffite in a first-rate motorsport showing.
