Zurich’s Office of Parks and Open Spaces, Grün Stadt Zürich, maintains all public green spaces in the city (street and park trees, urban woodlands, parks, playgrounds and cemeteries) and has invested in a new Scania G 410 natural gas truck powered by locally-produced biomethane.
This department manages 40% of the entire city area and employs 550 people including apprentices. Its daily activities generate huge amounts of organic waste.
“Scania offers us the opportunity to use a natural gas engine, which we can run on 100% biogas,” said Beat Schraner, Fleet Manager at Grün Stadt Zürich. “We have large amounts of green waste that we can refuel from, thereby reaching a closed recycling loop.”
The city of Zürich attaches particular importance to the environment and its departments are expected to act as role models, according to Schraner. “With this truck we can do that and that’s why this is the ideal vehicle for us in carrying out daily work,” he added.
