The Strasbourg Transport Company (CTS, as in its French acronym) has embarked on developing clean buses since 1997, when it launched the first NGV prototype. The experiment was successful and its first CNG station was later constructed in Elsau depot, in 1998.
“In recent years, natural gas has become the green fuel choice for local communities. Building a third station demonstrates CTS confidence in local players Gnvert and CNG, especially to anticipate traffic restrictions related to noise and pollution that several European cities have already adopted,” said Karine Vernier, Gnvert’s president.
Currently, CTS has 112 buses running on methane. Moreover, 30 additional NGVs will be put in operation in Cronenbourg by the end of 2011 while this figure will be doubled in 2012. The operator seeks to switch its entire bus fleet to compressed natural gas for better environmental protection and diesel replacement.
