French energy firm ENGIE and Mexican Energía Natural Peninsular announced a plan to accelerate the use of natural gas in transportation, industry, business and hotel area of the Yucatán Peninsula. For this, 14 natural gas stations are planned, six located in Mérida, in addition to the entry into operation of the first compressed natural gas plant in the area, with an investment of 25 million dollars.
The project started with the presentation of the first station with availability of CNG in Mérida, which is now open for public transport and the company’s fleets.
With this launch, Yucatán joins the other 10 states in the country that already offer natural gas for buses, taxis and fleets. As a result, users of this fuel will achieve savings of around 50% on average, compared to traditional fuels and the reduction of particulate pollutants (carbon dioxide by 85%), according to ENGIE.
During the ceremony in Mérida, Philippe Delmotte, President and CEO of Energía Natural Peninsular, detailed the plans for the region: “We have 14 CNG stations planned from now and for the following years. With this we will take a very important step to promote sustainable mobility in Yucatán and, at the same time, we will put at the service of the region an efficient and highly competitive source of energy, such as natural gas, for transportation.”
Likewise, Energía Natural Peninsular will launch the CNG Plant in Yucatán to bring more natural gas to the industries, business and hotel area that operates in the Peninsula. The use of natural gas will allow them to save up to 40% on their energy bill and thereby drive further growth in the region, ENGIE said. The CNG plant will start operations in the first quarter of 2017.
This continuously growing market will host the region’s most important event in the alternative fuel industry.
