“It was possible to achieve up to 90% replacement of liquid fuel with CNG not applying major changes to the conventional diesel engine. This figure represents 18% reduction in CO2 emissions, one of the main gases that cause the greenhouse effect. About a 30% cut in particulate matter was also achieved,” said Gilberto Leal, Manager of Engine Development at Mercedes-Benz Brazil.
Natural gas is injected directly into the engine’s inlet manifold through a metering and mixing system. The amount of natural gas is electronically administered, in combination with the electronic control of the fuel-air ratio.
“With the possibility of increasing the supply of natural gas for vehicles in the country, the use of this fuel in urban buses is an important alternative to reduce both the fossil fuels consumption and the operational cost of transport companies,” concluded Leal.
