Legend and more
Palazzo Re Enzo is a famous palace right in the historical centre of Bologna, facing Piazza Nettuno. It was named after the king Enzo was imprisoned there. He was left free within the palace during the day, but at night he was kept into a cage hanging from the ceiling. He was also allowed to meet women: among them, there was a peasant, Lucia di Viadagola, with whom he had a son. He was called Bentivoglio, from the words in Italian “Amore mio, ben tivoglio” that he said to his beloved (meaning “My love, I’m fond of you”), and he would be the ancestor of the Bentivoglio family, later rulers of Bologna.
