In response to the interest of various sectors of the national shipbuilding industry in having a framework for the construction of vessels powered by clean fuels, the Argentine Naval Prefecture announced measures to allow the use of LNG, CNG and LPG, both in ships that sail international as well as national, in line with the global trend on the use of efficient alternative fuels with a low polluting profile; essential aspects to promote the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable mobility.
The aforementioned measures, adopted by provision DISFC-2022-188-APN-PNA#MSG, are consistent with the entry into force of the international safety code for ships using gases or other low-flashpoint fuels (IGF Code), adopted by the Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) through resolution MSC.391(95).
The new regulations cover the approval and control of on-board installations that use natural gas in diesel cycle engines as well as the use of LPG in vessels authorized to use internal combustion engines and safety aspects related to the ship-port interface taking into account the regulations established by other national organizations regarding distribution and supply through authorized stations on land. Likewise, said regulations also provide for compliance with international rules regarding the specialized training of embarked personnel responsible for the operation of gas-powered merchant ships.
Through these measures, the Prefecture seeks to contribute to the development of a national flag fleet and the safe use of cheaper and more environmentally friendly fuels, in line with the IMO motto for 2022: new technologies for a greener marine transport and the need to support a green transition of the shipping industry towards a sustainable future.
