The production (50 tonnes of fuel a day) will serve five filling stations that the Tasmanian company LNG Refuellers plans to build on major trucking routes at Burnie, Westbury, Rocherlea and Scottsdale, while another is being completed at Epping Forest.
Tasmania’s premier, Lara Giddings, who officially inaugurated the building, said: “The opening of this plant will have flow-on benefits to our community as it should improve the competiveness of road-based transport infrastructure.”
In turn, Federal Resources minister, Martin Ferguson, said he hopes the Westbury plant serves as a blueprint for a national network. “LNG is emerging as an effective solution for the Australian haulage industry in both commercial and environmental terms”, he stated.
The BOC plant, which meets the strict environmental standards of Tasmania, cost USD 150 million that came from private investment and government grants.
