Currently, Uruguay consumes about 300,000 m3 of natural gas per day (only 2% of the energy), as it depends on imports. However, after the launch of the regasification plant the government plans to use the fuel for transportation, initially in taxis and buses, and to switch power plants operating on oil to cheaper and less polluting gas.
The Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining, Roberto Kreimerman, said the signing of the contract is the kick-off of the construction phase, “which is the most complex stage”. He stressed that the terminal will be “a milestone in the energy diversification strategy promoted by the Government”.
