The company Ad Astra Rocket Company, led by scientist Franklin Chang and Costa Rican Oil Refinery (Recope) will open a refueling site to serve cars that run on hydrogen in the province of Guanacaste by the last quarter of next year.
Over the last two and a half years, Ad Astra Rocket Company and the state-owned refinery have invested $2 million in this project. The team is currently working on the last phase concerning the way in which the hydrogen will be dispensed. Experts expect that this mechanism will be carried out by solar energy sources and wind.
Chang explained that the idea is to create a kind of fuel distribution ecosystem in Guanacaste which can be replicated in San José afterwards.
The plan is to make public sector to acquire hydrogen-based vehicles by the end of 2015, in order to promote the use of clean energy in transport, said Jimmy Fernández, Head of Research at Recope.
