In charge of an international consortium formed by Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway, a 26-million Euros pilot project stood out, encouraging the use of liquid natural gas as a future fuel for international shipping, reported the Spanish media Empresa Exterior.
The program, presented by Mogens Bech of the Danish Maritime Authority at Madrid’s Palacio de Congresos, involves the evaluation of the feasibility of using LNG-powered ships and the launching of a pilot test that will provide a platform facing the assessment of future possibilities for large-scale application.
Currently, critical factors are being identified, such as supply chain of LNG, maritime refuelling stations, security issues, regulation policies that should be developed as well as industry standards. According to Bech, a key aspect for the project implementation will be the price competitiveness compared to other fuels and the emission reduction.
