A fleet of 20 Fiat Panda will be added in total and the objective is to evaluate the performance of the engines powered by natural gas with 30 percent of hydrogen. “We want to test the effectiveness of this new blend and the positive impact it will have on the environment,” said Formigoni. He also added it is a “pioneer program”.
“According to initial conclusions, the methane-hydrogen blend reduces CO2 emissions by 11 percent compared to pure methane and 34 percent compared to gasoline, and also involves an improvement in NOx emissions according to Euro 5 standards,” explained Raimondi.
The vehicles will refuel at a filling station located in Assago (Milan), which opened in 2009, and were carefully adapted from the Fiat Panda Natural Power -already available in the market- to ensure full compatibility with hydrogen. In the case the fuel blend is not used, the car can operate only on natural gas and its performance is the same.
