Baleària’s strategic plan includes the conversion of four high-speed ferries out of the nine owned by the company. We are working on implementing dual-fuel engines that could run on both natural gas and diesel, mainly not to condition operations over a route with a single energy source supply.
Fleet manager Guillermo Alomar said that there are numerous natural gas powered ferries in the Baltic region and also stressed: “We have the ability and experience to integrate climate change into our business scheme.” Then he added, “This investment in technology will greatly contribute to the company because the costs of ship maintenance and fuel consumption (compared to diesel) are much lower.”
It is worth mentioning that the European Union has recently committed itself to reducing CO2 emissions from 25 to 40 percent by 2020. In this sense, the work being done by Baleària accords with the EU objective on the need to fight against climate change.
