The improvement of air quality in cities with port activity is one of the issues that the natural gas sector identifies as a relevant concern of citizens and local governments, so it supports the use of natural gas in maritime transport. In ports, the regulation of bunkering or supply of fuel to ships is decisive to reduce emissions and contribute to cleaner air.
On 24 March 2019 the European Union’s 2017/352 Regulation will enter into force, bringing a great novelty: the change in the legal nature of bunkering service in ports, going from being a commercial to a port service and, therefore, with public service obligations. This document also considers supply of gaseous fuels a bunkering service, thus including natural gas mainly in its liquid form (LNG).
Sedigas is working on the general criteria for the provision of the bunkering service, with the aim of serving as a reference to the Port Authorities in the new drafting of Specific Conditions for each port.
LNG as fuel is already a technological reality for the maritime transport of goods and passengers in Spain, since it can be used on different types of ships and vessels. In addition, by establishing competitive bunkering tolls against nearby ports, Spain can attract the new market and increase the competitiveness of national ports.
Spain is the European country with the largest number of regasification plants, which places it at the head of the European Union and LNG storage capacity. Thanks to its geostrategic situation and the investments made to boost the LNG bunkering activity, the Spanish potential to develop this service in maritime transport is clear.
In turn, natural gas is presented as a key agent to achieve a carbon neutral economy in the maritime world.
Under these extremely favorable conditions for natural gas, and with an increasing demand for LNG as a marine fuel, AltFuels Iberia 2019 will take place on 11-14 June at IFEMA Trade Center in Madrid.
The event, which will offer a unique networking opportunity with multiple business options, will feature top-level conferences by experts from around the world who will share their experience in the implementation of natural gas and other clean energies, as well as companies throughout the value chain that will exhibit the latest technology in alternative fuels and sustainable mobility.
