Vigo will become part of a select group of ports in environmental matters, having a regular stop of a ro-ro ship propelled by LNG. This was announced by the President of the Port Authority of Vigo, Enrique César López Veiga, on the occasion of the inaugural stop of the largest ro-ro vessel in the world that uses this clean energy. The stop of the “AUTO ECO”, belonging to UECC shipping company, marks a milestone for the port, since it is the first time that a vessel of these characteristics docks in Vigo.
According to López Veiga, the LNG-powered ship will load a total of 2,400 vehicles manufactured in the Vigo plant of PSA Peugeot Citröen. It will be docked every week at the dock within a regular line for the export of PSA vehicles. During his speech on board the “AUTO ECO”, López Veiga highlighted the fact that the scale of this ship reinforces the LNG strategy being carried out by the Port Authority, in accordance with the philosophy of the use of clean fuels and expanding potential collaborations in the future.
“The port of Vigo has already begun work on the logistics of LNG supply in the port for the future, with the location of the intermediate storage facility and the supply vessel,” he declared and emphasized Vigo’s commitment to become a Green Port: “It is a clean port in terms of its traffic and where it is also located a very powerful industry of sea food products, and should therefore be an example in this regard,” he added.
In this regard, he recalled that the port works on various projects within the framework of the Blue Growth Plan, which are related to the use of LNG, such as the “Effivessel” project, to promote the incorporation of LNG as fuel through training and legislative reinforcement on small vessels (under project 36. Blue Growth Training); the “SamueLNG” project, to create a system for LNG bunkering and electric power to ships docked at port (under project 20 “SMEB”); or the “Core LNGas hive” project, based on a system of supply to ships of the Motorway of the Sea using LNG.
